Increasingly, U.S. universities are engaging late-career stage industrial chemists and engineers to teach, mentor, and enrich their undergraduate and graduate research programs. These “Professors of Practice” can supplement or enrich existing courses and, occasionally, can serve as the foundation for adding new, specialized graduate programs. There are several successful models for “on-boarding” these professionals and making the most of their experience. This presentation draws from the presenter’s own experience, research into programs at several prominent universities, and from his interviews with other “Professors of Practice.” Recommendations are provided both to individuals considering such an “encore” career as well as to university administrators and department chairmen considering adding “Professors of Practice” to their faculty.
