Several metal coordination complexes possessing [TCNE]-(TCNE = tetracyanoethylene)exhibit the technologically important property of bulk magnetism. These magnets are prepared via conventional organic synthetic chemistry methodologies. Furthermore, these magnets are frequently soluble in conventional organic solvents and have saturation magnetizations more than twice that of iron metal on a mole basis, as well as in some cases coercive fields exceeding that of all commercial magnets (e.g. Co5Sm). Ionic 0-D [Fe(C5Me5)2]+[TCNE]-is a bulk ferromagnet, while 1-D [MnTPP]+[TCNE]-(H2TPP = tetraphenylporphyrin), 2-D Mn(TCNE)I(OH2), and 3-D Mn(TCNE)3/2(I3)1/2are ferrimagnets. In contrast, 3-D structured Mn(TCNE)[C4(CN)8]1/2is a synthetic/artificial antiferromagnetdue to alternating nano-sized layers of ferrimagnetic layers separated by nonmagnetic[C4(CN)8]2-layers. Also, 3-D interpenetrating sphalerite structured Li+[TCNE]-is a weak ferromagnet (canted antiferromagnet). The structure magnetic properties relationship will be discussed.
