Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous crystalline materials that possess intriguing properties due to their notable internal surface areas. In recent years, these materials have gathered attention in the scientific community due to their versatile applications in catalysis, gas sorption, drug delivery, and luminesce. Desired properties in MOFs can be tuned based on the organic linkers and metal clusters employed during synthesis. In this study, a family of flexible tricarboxylic acid linkers were utilized towards the synthesis of novel breathable MOFs. These ligands were designed so that their conformational flexibility could be exploited in a MOF. Three novel tricarboxylic acid ligands were successfully synthesized using methods adapted from the literature and characterized using <sup>1</sup>H NMR and <sup>13</sup>C NMR. These ligands have been employed in solvothermal synthesis with a variety of metal salts. Promising results have been obtained using copper(II) and zinc(II) salts. MOFs produced from these reactions will be characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, FTIR, and gas sorption analysis.
