Metal alkoxides ([M(OR)x]) are one of the most widely used precursors to ceramic materials; however, due to uncontrolled hydrolysis and condensation pathways for the standard monodentate ligands, ceramic oxide materials with uncontrolled properties are often generated. Polydentate ligands are frequently used to control the structure/decomposition of the [M(OR)4] precursors to allow for directionalized hydrolysis favoring more uniform materials production. Ligands that are more flexible than commercial alcohols were of interest to allow for tailored materials’ properties. Following a Mannich condensation route a wide variety of polydentate alcohols were successfully isolated (i.e., such as 6,6'-(((2-hydroxyethyl)azanediyl)bis(methylene))bis(2,4-di-tert-butylphenol) (termed H3-AM-DBP2), and N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(3,5-R-benzyl-2-hydroxy)-2,2'-(ethylenedioxy)diethanamine (termed H4-OEA-R4; R = t-butyl (DBP), chloro (DCP)), and [tetra(3,5-R-2-hydroxybenzyl)-N,N'-ethylenediamine] (termed H4-ED-R4; R= t-butyl (DBP), t-amyl (DAP), chloro (DCP)). These were used to modify a series of group 4 metal alkoxides ([M(OR)4]) and structurally characterized. This presentation will discuss the synthesis and characterization of the ligands, [M(OR)4] modified compounds, and subsequent materials produced. An emphasis on group 4 metals for use as precursors to nanomaterials will be discussed.
