Over the past two years, University of Detroit Mercy’s Chemistry Club has hosted its first lecture series, which is dedicated to Dr. John A. McLean, Jr., professor Emeritus, former chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and beloved mentor to all. We started this lecture series to set a consistent date where past and present students and faculty would come together to celebrate all accomplishments in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. The purpose of this lecture series is to increase relationships with alumni, peers and professors, and the local universities around us, and to encourage undergraduates of every background to pursue careers in STEM fields. Two individuals, who are renowned in their field, accepted our invitation to speak at our event. One of them was Dr. Ginger V. Shultz from the University of Michigan who spoke about her research on the importance of encouraging undergraduates to write in STEM courses. The other was Dr. Mary Ann B. Meador from NASA Glenn Research Center, who spoke about her research on implementing aerogels for space exploration.
