The general structure of a chalcone has a 1,3-diphenyl-2-propene-1-one moiety, in which two aromatic rings are linked by a three carbon α, β-unsaturated carbonyl system. By using trans-cinnamaldehyde and an aromatic ketone, we have extended the conjugation by two sp2 hybridized carbon atoms. Variation of substitution on both the aromatic ketone and or the trans-cinnamaldehyde generates chalcones that possess a variety of colors in the visible region owing to the electron donating or electron withdrawing nature of the substituents. The synthesis of these compounds is rapid and provides many teaching opportunities at the undergraduate level including melting point, recrystallization techniques, TLC, UV-Vis IR and NMR spectroscopy as appropriate. We will also discuss the synthesis and spectroscopic analyses of these compounds.
