<i>Plantago major</i>, known more commonly as Plantain Leaf, is a common weed found throughout the midwestern states of the U.S. as well as Europe and Asia. Traditionally the leaves have been used in medicinal remedies to help soothe and heal wounds. Several different substituents likely contribute to the healing properties of the plant. This experiment looks to isolate the substituents Allantoin and Apigenin from the leaves. The presence of allantoin in the plant was determined using sodium hydroxide to synthesize glyoxylic acid from allantoic acid. Isolation of Allantoin will be attempted using an ethyl acetate extraction method. Ethyl acetate and methanol will be used to extract Apigenin from the leaves. NMR spectroscopy, Infrared spectroscopy, GC/MS, and thin-layer chromatography will be used to identify and characterize Allantoin and Apigenin.
