“Applying Chemistry to Society” is found on the front cover of each Chemistry in Context book. As a new faculty member, I wanted to show my students how to connect chemistry to real world issues. I did not want my students to memorize facts “just because.” At a Chemistry In Context workshop, I first met Cathy and learned how to engage students using current issues in the news, such as climate change, energy, and water resources. I was also introduced by her to a community of educators in the organization, SENCER, Science Education for New Civic Engagement and Responsibilities, where connections are made between science and civic issues. Today, as I prepare a new or update a lecture or activity, I often ask myself, "What would Cathy do?" Students do learn, both in and out of the classroom, when they apply chemistry to society and see the connection between science and the world in which they live.
