The identification of an unknown organic molecule is an experiment commonly employed in the second-year organic chemistry laboratory. Traditional characterization techniques typically include mass spectrometry, IR spectroscopy, and 1-D NMR spectroscopy, including 1H and 13C NMR experiments. Over the course of several years, 2-D NMR spectroscopy (COSY, HSQC, and HMBC) has been incorporated into the characterization of unknown compounds. Second-year undergraduate students have successfully executed and analyzed 2-D NMR spectra for a variety of organic molecules. To evaluate the performance of each student, a detailed set of rubrics has been developed.
