Flow chemistry is a synthetic method that employs tubing and pumps rather than the traditional round bottom flask. One of the benefits of this system is the tighter control of temperature allowed when heating or cooling the tubing. The dehydration of 4-methylcyclohexanol is a good model reaction in which to apply flow chemistry due to this tighter temperature control as this reaction has the potential to form both kinetic and thermal methylcyclohexene products. This study details efforts to improve the reaction selectivity. Results indicate that temperature and reaction time play a vital role in achieving the best yield of the desired product. Intentional design of the flow system allowed for further improvement of product ratios and consistency of yields.
