Modified mesoporous zirconia catalysts were synthesized through a sol-gel process using a methylimidazolium-based ionic liquid template. The zirconia was modified by either sulfating the surface or adding titanium into the pores of the pure zirconia catalyst. The catalysts were characterized by FTIR-ATR spectroscopy and N<sub>2 </sub>physisorption at 77 K, XRD and TEM. The catalytic activities of both catalysts were also examined through the self-aldol condensation of cyclopentanone and analyzed by GCMS. <br/>
