The student chapter of the American Chemical Society at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa, is an active group of students who focus on building the professional skills of their student members, creating an environment for scientific collaboration, and sharing chemistry and biochemistry with the UNI campus and the community through STEM outreach events.<br/>Our chapter activities emphasize professional development and community engagement. For students hoping to pursue graduate degrees, we have organized a CV workshop and trips to nearby universities with graduate programs in chemistry and biochemistry. We also assist with undergraduate research opportunities, particularly in providing opportunities for students to present their work at regional and national meetings. For students looking to enter the workforce after graduation, we have organized tours of local companies that are actively hiring chemists. Our National Chemistry Week event, Halloween House, brings over 1,000 community members into the department, and allows our members to build valuable skills in communicating scientific concepts to the general public and performing chemistry demonstrations safely. Our chapter works hard to provide support to our students in conducting and presenting research, exploring career options, and by creating faculty-student connections and a student-to-student support network.
