Many expectations have been bestowed upon various grades of nanocellulose, and their application potential is vast – at least when assessing the number of scientific publications geared toward materials science and technology. However, many observers have noted that nanocellulose has failed to fulfill its promises concerning its materials applications in particular. This is a controversial statement bearing in mind the current success of the first commercial applications of nanocellulose but it is true that the path toward genuinely useful applications has been rocky. In this presentation, we review the major generic obstacles in the usage of nanocellulose: difficulties in preparation, compatibility issues in composites, complicated surface modification and so forth. The idea is to give an honest overview of the hindrances that still prevent the use of nanocellulose to its full potential.<br/>
