Supported catalysts are typically synthesized by solution based methods. Alternatively, such systems can be produced mechanochemically. By milling macroscopic metal powders with suitable support materials, highly dispersed metal nanopartticles supported on oxides can be created. For instance, gold powder milled for several hours with high surface area titania results in the formation of 3-4 nm sized gold particles on the titania support. Various other metal/support combinations have been tested successfully. Interestingly, for some systems phase transformations of the oxide support were observed. For instance, starting from different types of alumina, ball milling resulted in the formation of alpha-alumina, which is obtained with high surface area exceeding 100 m<sup>2</sup>/g in favorable cases. Thus, catalysts consisting of metals supported on high surface area alpha alumina can be produced. The new method provides a simple and purely solid-state access to supported catalysts.
