<i>Meso</i>-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin is a water-soluble photosensitizing agent that is useful for treating cancer via photodynamic therapy. The photophysical properties of this compound were analyzed to understand its behavior in aqueous solution at various pH levels. In particular, the experiments focused on the time and pH dependence of their aggregation. The analytical method of acid-base titrations of the porphyrin in three different acids – hydrochloric acid, acetic acid, and phosphoric acid – with sodium hydroxide indicated the equivalence point where the solution turned from acidic to basic. UV-Vis spectroscopy of the porphyrin in phosphate buffers of varying pH demonstrated the formation of J-aggregates in acidic conditions, while no or minimal aggregation was observed in neutral and basic conditions.
