The behavior of drying crystal violet and titanium dioxide slurries was analyzed using time-resolved Raman spectroscopy. Throughout each drying period, broad peaks centered at 2100 cm-1 and 3200 cm-1 formed, alternated, and dissipated. Characteristic peaks from crystal violet decreased, leaving only titanium dioxide peaks present in each final spectrum. Basic pH crystal violet solutions were created to analyze the precipitate formed at high crystal violet concentrations and high pH. As the precipitate formed, a broad peak centered at 2000 cm-1 appeared in the Raman spectrum. This precipitate was isolated and analyzed using Raman spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, 1H NMR, 13C DEPT NMR, and HSQC NMR. The data suggests two compounds are interacting in the precipitate: crystal violet carbinol and crystal violet.
