Doxorubicin has been heavily utilized as an intravenous chemotherapeutic anti-tumor drug for several decades. However, the bioavailability of doxorubicin by oral delivery is limited to approximately 5%. Improving upon the bioavailability of this essential anti-tumor drug through oral delivery presents significant potential to improve the quality of treatment for cancer patients. Using biocompatible, hydrogen bonding hydrogel networks, this work presents a sustained drug delivery matrix with the potential to improve the oral bioavailability of doxorubicin. This work presents the preparation of crosslinked polymer networks based on nucleobase polymers with complementary hydrogen bonding. Particularly, this work focuses on polymer structure-dependent control over hydrogel properties and sustained drug release of doxorubicin.
