It was recently reported that alkenes can be prepared in a stereospecific manner by an eliminative cross-coupling process between a pair of enantioenriched sp<sup>3</sup>-hybridized carbenoids: an alpha-(carbamoyloxy)alkylboronate and an alpha-(carbamoyloxy)alkyllithium. To apply this methodology to complex alkene targets requires that each of these reactive moieties be installed within appropriate polyfunctional intermediates. The challenges associated with this task and the development of potential strategies to combat them will be discussed in the context of an elaboration of an benzopyranylidenyl isoquinoline derivative with P-glycoprotein inhibitory activity.
