Phomoxanthone A (PXA) is a natural product that was first isolated in 2001 from Phomopsis longicolla, a fungus native to teak trees in northern Thailand. Early studies found phomoxanthone A to be the most biologically active of the natural products isolated from this fungus. Previous research has shown that PXA exhibits a notable inhibition of cancer cells, including those known to be Cisplatin resistant. Additionally, phomoxanthone A has demonstrated selective cytotoxicity toward cancerous cells (when compared to healthy cells), making it a promising molecule to explore in the field of cancer research. In order to identify and optimize the biological activity of phomoxanthone A, its molecular structure must be explored. This research describes the synthesis of two simplified analogs for phomoxanthone A, as well as substantial work toward a third analog. The simplified analogs synthesized (in whole or part) throughout the duration of this research will be screened for bioactivity, allowing for the observation and eventual optimization of bioactivity based on the identity of the substituent in the 2-position.
