Opioids are a common crisis in America, but the drugs used are not always common. Some opioids are unusual, such as desomorphine, the active ingredient in krokodil. The literature shows that the metabolites of desomorphine have been identified. Although N-demethylation is a major route of metabolism in the literature, other N-dealkylations that would result in ring opening have not been reported. Investigation of aldehyde production was undertaken using dextromethorphan, a molecule with a structure similar to desomorphine. Methods to identify aldehydes were created using 1H-NMR, Purpald assay, and GC-MS. Dextromethorphan was metabolized by mutants of CYP102A1 in order to yield a variety of metabolites. Literature gives rough estimates of some mutants of CYP102A1 that can metabolize dextromethorphan at different activities, also yielding different metabolites. A system to create metabolites from opioid-like structures and identify the metabolites was established.
