<br/>The distinctive properties of boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) fluorescent dyes have made this type of compound very interesting for applications in many areas of research, for example in biological labeling, molecular imaging, and in photodynamic therapy. BODIPY dyes typically display strong UV-Vis absorptions, sharp fluorescence emissions peaks, and good solubility in a variety of solvents. In this work we will present a novel strategy for functionalization of the boron atom of 4,4-difluoro-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-8-phenyl-BODIPY using trimethylsilyl nucleophiles under mild conditions. Using this method, the fluorine atoms on the boron were substituted by different groups, and the resulting BODIPYs displayed unique photophysical and chemical properties. We will report on the structural characterization of the new BODIPYs and their spectroscopic properties, including their maximum absorption and fluorescence emission wavelengths, Stoke’s shifts, molar extinction coefficients and fluorescence quantum yields.
