Flow chemistry is an innovative synthesis method that has been used in the fields of petroleum chemistry, bulk chemistry, and pharmaceutical companies. One of the primary advantages of applying flow chemistry to a reaction is that the technique allows for the optimization of a multi-step reaction through a singular flow system. Crown ethers are ideal compounds to showcase this feature to the long reaction time and low yield of crown ether synthesis in batch chemistry. Detailed in this work is the construction of a multi-step flow system for the synthesis of benzo-15-crown-5. After initial optimizations, a flow system for the first step was developed. The synthesis of the macrocyclization step was then converted to flow. Finally, efforts to combine these two separate systems into a single flow system are discussed.
