Recently, there has been significant interest in the synthesis of azaindoles due to significant biological activity such as use as, <i>inter alia</i>, kinase inhibitors and analgesic ability. As such, the commercial availability and synthetic approaches to these compounds has increased significantly. While substitution at all benzene positions is possible, the most common occurs at the 7- position, with the pyridine-nitrogen proximal to the indolic N-H. Our interest in the 7-azaindole platform, is rooted in this proximity and the potential for interesting hydrogen-bonding behavior. To probe these effects, we have directly synthesized a series of 7,7’-azaindigo derivatives through a molybdenum-catalyzed process first developed for the synthesis of indigo. Synthesis, characterization and exploration of their behavior is ongoing.
