The retention and transfer of content and skills between semesters of organic chemistry are equally important for student success.  Due to the nature of organic chemistry, this is an ongoing problem for students in the second semester. Previously, we have developed an instrument administered between the first and second semester of organic chemistry to measure this aforementioned retention of information.  These studies indicate that there is no strong correlation between a student’s retention of information and their performance in either Organic Chemistry I or Organic Chemistry II.  Therefore, current studies are aimed towards refining the tool into a mastery-based learning instrument that can be used throughout the second semester to reinforce important concepts and skills.  The resulting data collected from our study and lessons learned from the experience are reported.
