Siderophores are small molecule natural products produced by microbes to sequester Fe(III), a bioessential cation that is insoluble under normal environmental conditions. Siderophores have been investigated for their role in solubilizing actinides in the environment and also for potential actinide decorporating agents in-vivo. Despite high affinity, these systems have demonstrated low biostability. Peptoids are N-alkyl or N-aryl glycine polymers that are much more stable to hydrolysis then the ester or amide linkages found in natural siderophores. Liquid phase synthesis of a cyclic hexamer peptoid core, followed by functionalization to produce an enterobactin-like analogue is reported. Binding studies and the synthesis of a small library of analogues is underway.
