By using coupling chemistry, organotrifluoroborates react with benzyne to yield ortho-substituted aromatic compounds following typical coupling methodology. The use of organotrifluoroborates makes this an attractive synthetic approach due to their ease of preparation and their inherent stability. In this case, organotrifluoroborates are used as the nucleophilic source in conjunction with benzyne which typically serves as an electrophile. With the ortho-substituted organotrifluoroborate, (2) in hand, a typical coupling methodology in tandem to produce compounds (3) was investigated. The scope and limitations of reactions to form (2) and the tandem strategy in the formation of (3) will be discussed.
