Scientific laboratories, especially academic institutions and small businesses, often accumulate laboratory equipment over several years. As such, the computing systems that drive the individual pieces of equipment can vary widely in their age, operating systems, and computing power. This makes the process of collecting, analyzing, visualizing, and cataloging data on these systems very labor intensive or, if these systems are exposed directly to the internet, dangerously insecure. We propose a set of tools and techniques to safely integrate these heterogeneous computing systems for data analysis and scientific decision support and illustrate with a case study on the analysis of lead compounds in natural product systems. The utility of such laboratory computer upgrades will be discussed.
