Criminals attempt to fraudulently claim wines come from certain desirable regions to make them more valuable. Developing wine growing regions like the Chesapeake Bay have an opportunity to grow as an industry from recent increase in demand for locally grown foods. Counterfeiters using out-of-region grapes could threaten this development. Grapes and their respective wines have unique elemental, phenolic, and stable isotopic chemical composition that reflect the environmental conditions in which they are grown. Various spectroscopic methods are used to create a chemical fingerprint of wine growing regions using these unique compositions. This has not to our knowledge been done for Chesapeake Bay area wines. Analysis of the elemental, phenolic, and stable isotope profile will be done on Chesapeake Bay area wines to create a chemical fingerprint for the reference of future researchers, government, and private interest. Testing will involve using ICP-MS, LC-MS, and IRMS, with chemometric data analysis for pattern identification. We expect the unique soil and environmental conditions of this region will manifest themselves in the chemical profile of the wines produced there. <br/><br/>
