Calixarenes are macrocycles with substituted benzene rings joined by methylene units. Selective modification of a single methylene bridge position of a calix[4]arene allows for subsequent reaction joining that group to an oxygen at the lower rim. Oxazoles (<b>1</b>) and dihydrobenzofurans (<b>2</b>) have been prepared by this methodology. The structure and reactivity of these species will be described.
