Several years ago, the author had the opportunity to participate in two seemingly different but closely related projects. One was an international conference on Science Education Research and Education for Sustainable Development held at the University of Bremen. The other was a project initiated by colleagues in science education at both the University of Bremen and the Weizmann Institute in Israel that was based on the assumption that the term “relevance” is commonly used to describe efforts to build programs that are more likely to motivate students to want to learn science but seldom adequately defined. This paper will look at efforts to bring “sustainability” into the science curriculum in more than 30 projects from Brazil to Tanzania, from Turkey to Bosnia and Herzegovina that were motivated by the declaration of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development between 2005 and 2014.
