We have recently reported the facile (4+3)-cycloaddition of an easily accessible class of oxidopyridinium ions with dienes. In considering the structures of the cycloadducts, we expected that photolysis would result in the formation of complex polycyclic systems as a result of an intramolecular [2+2]-photocycloaddition. This is indeed the case. Interestingly, such structures can be viewed as rigid tropane alkaloid analogues. The scope and mechanism of the photochemical reaction will be discussed.
