Solid state NMR has been proven to be a useful tool to investigate the crystallinity of cellulose but give significantly different results from the classical X-ray diffraction experiments. Among other reasons, the inherently local character of the technique makes the technique sensitive to molecular details linked to the conformation of the chains at the surface / in the defects versus the periodicity probed by the diffraction experiments. However, this sensitivity can also be used to precisely investigate the nature of these details, especially in terms of allomorphism and nature of the surface. Thanks to techniques like 2 dimensional or spin diffusion experiments, it is possible to reveal some details in the nature of the surface that will be discussed during this paper.   <br/>
