The classic S<sub>N</sub>1 alkylation of C-nucleophiles typically requires strong Lewis or Brønsted-Lowry acids and alkyl halides as the electrophile. Performing the reactions in water instead of organic solvent can minimize the amount of hazardous waste that is generated. Substituting alcohols as the pro-electrophiles in these types of reactions can also minimize the waste that is produced in these reactions; water is the inorganic by-product of instead of heavy halide salts. In this study the reaction of activated alcohols with 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds was studied under conditions of various surfactants and acid catalysts to determine the product distribution.
