We have done screening studies with various vanadium, cobalt and ruthenium complexes to explore the oxidation of alcohols and ethers. Oxidation of benzyl alcohol using vanadium and cobalt-oxo complexes in the presence of NaOCl shows the formation of benzaldehyde. Similar reactions with Ru(acac)3 and V2O3 show the oxidation of tetrahydrofuran to butyro-lactone. We will discuss the chemistry of this process, including spectroscopic data.
