The interaction between the support and noble metal co-catalyst significantly affects the reactivity of the catalyst, which has been proved by Schwab in 1960s (Angew. Chem., 1967, 6, 375). In the view of being economically feasible, environmentally benign and highly resistant against chemical corrosions, titania has been extensively used as supports for noble metal co-catalyst. Recent studies on defective TiO2 namely “black TiO2” are developed from defect engineering techniques. These “black titania” have been explored widely as photocatalysts for energy productions. However, the surface chemical properties of these black titania are hardly investigated, even less is the impact from these defective surfaces on the loaded co-catalyst metals. In our previous work (J. Catal., 2018, 365, 303), we have developed approaches to prepare single-site noble metal stabilized by organic ligands. The single site noble-metals can be homogeneously distributed on the surface of supports. Previous work by Saeys et al. (ACS Catal., 2017, 7, 1966) shows the carrier density on anatase substrates dramatically affects the activity of catalysts for the ethylene hydrogenation. Here, we use a well-defined defect-engineering technique to further tune the charge carrier density between titania support and charged Pt atoms. An optimized hydrosilylation efficiency is achieved when the interaction between titania surface and Pt single site atoms is maximized (10-fold higher activity). Further analysis reveals the surface chemistry of titania affects the adsorption of Pt atoms, which makes a significant role during hydrosilylation reaction.
