Aflatoxins are mycotoxins that are produced by certain molds such as Aspergillus parasiticus and Apsergillus flavus. They are seen to grow on peanuts, soy sauce, maize, and fermented soybeans. Human exposure to Aflatoxins from the diet has been linked to the development of liver cancer. The current research focuses on the development and validation of a quick and reliable method for quantification of Aflatoxin AFB1 and its major metabolite AFM1 in body fluids. The experimental methods involve extracting AFB1 and AFM1 through dispersive pipette extraction (DPX) followed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Some traditional methods to extract Aflatoxins are based on immune-affinity sample cleanup followed by (LC) liquid chromatography or (CE) capillary electrophoresis analysis. However, these sample preparation methods are expensive, many steps are required, and there is an increase in analysis time. Disposable pipette extraction (DPX) is a type of newly developed solid phase extraction method that is easy, quick, and reliable. DPX eliminates the use of large volumes of organic solvents and sample needed for the extraction process. Thus, evaluating the presence and amount of AFB1 and AFM1 in bodily fluids will provide information on improved accuracy and precision of solid phase extraction and chromatographic analysis. The DPX methodology presented here incorporates DPX using styrene-divinylbenzene (SDVB) for sample extraction and concentration, which provided satisfying accuracy (recoveries &gt; 90%) and precision (%RSDs &lt; 5%) for extraction of aflatoxins B1 and M1 in body fluids.
