We report here the synthesis of a variety of macrocyclic polyphenylbuta-1,3-diynylarenes from a common intermediate, 3-(buta-1,3-diynyl)phenol. These two-dimensional conjugated architectures may be useful in the preparation of photoreactive materials such as electronic sensors or light harvesting materials. Previous work in our group on macrocyclic polyphenylethynylarenes show twisting and interruption of <i>π</i>-conjugation due to the steric interactions of the hydrogens in the ortho positions of the phenyl rings. Here we report the incorporation of diynes into these structures to alleviate this problem. The extended length of the diyne units versus an ethynyl unit, should get the hydrogens far enough away from each other to avoid twisting of the structure.
