Chlorate (ClO3−) is a toxic oxidizer generated from electrochemical oxidation of chloride ion. It pollutes water from industrial waste discharge, agricultural herbicide application, and drinking water disinfection. Platinum group metals such as palladium (Pd) have been used to reduce oxyanion pollutants in water through heterogeneous hydrogenation catalysis, but the kinetics of ClO3− reduction by applying Pd catalysts are sluggish. We have discovered that the immobilization of Group 6−8 metal oxides, osmium (Os), rhenium (Re), tungsten (W), and molybdenum (Mo) into supported Pd catalysts could yield highly active bimetallic composite for rapid reduction of ClO3− into Cl− under ambient temperature and pressure. We have conducted catalyst characterization with electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy to elucidate the structure of active sites on the catalyst surface and reaction mechanism. This study demonstrates high promise of harnessing Group 6−8 oxygen-atom-transfer (OAT) metals to alleviate the need of precious hydrogenation metals for environmental technology development, and also provides valuable mechanistic insights to OAT reactions at the heterogeneous interface with aqueous media.
