Broad introduction of stringent emission regulations for diesel and natural gas-powered engines, starting from the US EPA 2007/2010 standards, followed by Euro VI, and now under implementation in China, India, and other countries, has brought to life a number of new catalytic technologies. Among these are Lean NOx Trap (LNT) catalysts, selective catalytic reduction catalysts based on metal exchanged zeolites (SCR), as well as catalysts for lean- or stoichiometric-burn methane-fueled vehicles, which have inspired an explosion of industrial and academic catalyst research. The practical implementation of these multi-catalyst, transiently operated systems, designed to perform with high efficiency across a broad range of conditions and over many years, have required detailed understanding of their reaction mechanisms and degradation characteristics. Addressing these challenges was only possible through extensive collaboration between industry, academia, and National Labs, to combine the practically relevant application knowledge and tools with the in-depth expertise and the arsenal of specialized capabilities. In this presentation, we will build upon the rich legacy of such collaborations, with the emphasis on the partnership between Cummins and the PNNL catalysis group that was for many years lead by Dr. Chuck Peden, to share some of the recent advancements in the empirical and modeling studies of these catalysts.
