While aboard space stations, astronauts experience reduced physical activity, body composition, and thermoregulation. Additionally, astronauts are exposed to a non-24-hour light-dark cycle. As a result of these conditions, astronauts experience disruptions in their Circadian rhythms, which causes a decline in their health. To maintain their health and well-being, artificial lighting in the space cabins is critical for Circadian rhythm regulation. Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are an excellent source of artificial light due to their efficiency, robustness, and various color options. Many LEDs achieve this high efficacy through the incorporation of lanthanide ions. Because of the Laporte-forbidden f-f electronic transitions of their 4f orbitals, lanthanides exhibit sharp emission spectra. The brightness of lanthanide emission can be tuned through the coordination of different ligands. The coordination of different ligands and the incorporation of different lanthanides presents the opportunity to generate color-tunable LEDs. Our design method includes the use of a red emitter (Eu-β-diketonate complex), a green emitter (Tb-β-diketonate) and a blue-emitting organic ligand containing terpyridine. The organic ligand uses the synthesis of bis(terpyridine) dimers using Sonogashira coupling reactions followed by Glaser coupling reactions, and the utilization of various β-diketonate ligands, for the formation of heterodinuclear lanthanide complexes (Eu-Tb). The coordination chemistry of these complexes was characterized by FT-IR, UV-Vis, and fluorimetry.
