Our group is interested in preparing biomimetic complexes for the active sites of various metalloenzymes. We are trying to understand why and how soft-donor ligands, like sulfur, influence the bonding and reactivity of the active sites. In order to do this, we are synthesizing a suite of closely related transition metal complexes, including vanadium, chromium, and molybdenum. We have successfully synthesized a dithiodiphenylphosphinate ligand and have attempted to ligate with chromium and vanadium in the form of halide salts. We employ salt-metathesis to favor the formation of ligand-metal complexes and combine structural and spectroscopic analysis to gain a comprehensive understanding of bonding and reactivity. Several new compounds will be reported, as well as, preliminary spectroscopic analysis and future directions of the project.
