The acid catalyzed addition of heterocycles and benzylic alcohols is an example of the S<sub>N</sub>1 alkylation that is an important method of forming new carbon-carbon bonds. This reaction is traditionally carried out in organic media, using strong Lewis acids and alkyl halides as an electrophile. This method produces large quantities of organic waste. A variety of reaction conditions in an aqueous environment were examined to see how varying the acid and surfactant affected the yield and selectivity of the products.
