Iron-oxo clusters have interested researchers from diverse fields due to their relevance to bioinorganic chemistry, materials science, and molecular magnetism. These usually involve carboxylates as bridging ligands, but there are also a variety of ‘pseudo-carboxylates’ of formula RxYO2- group (x = 1 or 2; Y = N, P, S, Se, As) which can serve as bridging ligands. While iron-oxo-carboxylate chemistry has been extensively studied in the past, the use of the pseudo-carboxylic acid dimethylarsinic acid, Me2AsO2H, has seldom been employed in Fe chemistry. Moreover, in prior work our group has demonstrated the use of dimethylarsinic acid in synthesizing homometallic manganese-oxo and heterometallic manganese-calcium-oxo clusters with new structural topologies and interesting physical properties. Therefore, with the aim of developing iron-oxo cluster chemistry with this acid, the reaction of various iron reagents, such as [Fe3O(O2CR)6(H2O)3]+ or simple Fe3+ salts, with Me2AsO2H under different reaction conditions have been explored. The results of this work will be described in this presentation, including the preparation, crystal structure, and magnetic properties of a new dodecanuclear iron-oxo cluster with an [Fe6]2 dimeric topology.
