Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks (ZIFs) are a class of metal organic frameworks that are similar to zeolites in topology and noted for their gas sorption properties.  ZIFs are composed of transition metal ions linked by imidazole molecules, the free rotation of which allows for a high degree of framework flexibility. Under certain conditions, a reversible “gate-opening” mechanism can take place which transforms ZIF-7 from a low porosity, narrow pore structure to a high porosity, large pore (rhombohedral) structure. We report that this phase change can be driven by adsorption of guest molecules at low temperature and by entropic effects at high temperature. We have tracked these structural changes through in-situ XRD and adsorption isotherms to study the conditions as well as the mechanisms by which this transformation occurs.<br/>
