Metallacrowns are metallamacrocycles that can sensitize efficiently the luminescence of visible and Near IR emitting lanthanides. In this presentation, we will discuss the preparation of a wide range of Ga(III)LnLn'L8L'4 complexes that have interesting structures and physical properties, including excellent emission properties in solution and the solid state. In addition, we will discuss the preparation of functionalized systems that can be used in immunoassays or for cell targeting. As time allows, we may also examine related structures containing differernt Ga(III) and Ln(III) stoichiometries that provide alternative strategies for making next generation molecular species capable of cell, tissue or animal imaging.
