Significant efforts have been dedicated toward designing conjugated sequence-controlled peptides and synthetic vinyl polymers as a new class of polymeric materials.  Precisely incorporating a wide range of structural and/or functional peptides along the vinyl polymer backbone offers promising opportunities to design highly ordered biomaterials, including controlled polymer folding.  Herein we report a facile and versatile strategy for preparing functional multiblock copolymers composed of alternately aligned sequential peptides and well-defined vinyl polymers with a narrow polydispersity.  We developed cyclic peptides containing a TEMPO-derived alkoxyamine bond in the framework.  Controlled radical polymerization of styrene using this type of cyclic peptide initiator successfully provided a well-defined multiblock hybrid polymer in one step, in which chain extension and multimerization proceeded simultaneously.  Significantly, this method permitted easy manipulation of the peptide sequence in the multiblock hybrids.   In addition, we succeeded in expanding the compatibility of monomers with this method, including acrylamide and acrylate, by developing TIPNO-derived cyclic peptide initiator.  Folding behaviors of the resultant multiblock hybrids into well-defined nanoparticles<i> via </i>intramolecular cross-linking by peptide blocks will also be discussed.
