Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a class of nanoporous, hybrid inorganic-organic crystalline solids, have garnered attention as a novel class of electronic nanomaterials. MOFs are composed of metal ions linked to organic electron donors by coordination bonds. These self assemble under mild conditions to form crystalline materials with stable nanoporosity. Importantly, can be grown on surfaces by straightforward chemical methods. MOF chemists have also reported a new structure having a two-dimensional topology analogous to graphene, known as metal-organic graphene analogues (MOGs) such as Ni3(HITP)2 (HITP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexaiminotriphenylene). These exhibit exceptionally high electrical conductivity and are known to be semiconducting. However, no work has demonstrated fabrication of Ni3(HITP)2 films. Importantly, producing MOG films of single-digit nanometer resolution needed for device fabrication is extremely challenging. Previous work has shown that layer-by-layer deposition produces multilayers of MOG per deposition cycle. Therefore, we need more promising methods for precisely controlling film thickness and minimizing defects. In this work, we attempt to develop a method for the monolayer formation of a metal-organic graphene analogue, using Langmuir-Blodgett method.
