The Pasadena City College (PCC) Chemistry Club is dedicated to promoting and supporting chemistry on campus and in the community. The club invites students, regardless of major, to join club meetings to observe and discuss chemistry in action. The outreach program in our chemistry club volunteers with elementary and middle school students using chemistry demonstrations and the theory behind them, enriching the learning experience in the field of chemistry. Club members recently visited a local elementary school to lecture on acids and bases in an accessible, but informative way. A lab conducted by the club’s green chemistry program promoted solar technology and electrochemistry with the use of anthocyanin from blackberry concentrate as an electrolyte. By working with other STEM clubs through discussions and volunteering at each other’s event, the PCC Chemistry Club endeavor to both promote chemistry within the STEM community, as well as provide an interdisciplinary extracurricular experience. As a club we stress that science is a collaborative process and that everyone has a right to contribute and to learn. We strive to bring chemistry knowledge to all by allowing open membership to anyone regardless of their field of study. Our club allows every member an opportunity to learn about chemistry by participating in hands-on labs and encouraging group work and learning. Our goals are to educate, inspire, and to spark a growing interest in the field of chemistry to as many people as possible. Through laboratory demonstronstrations, social events, and possible trips to science related institutions, we hope to bring chemistry into the broader community and engrain familiarity to the sciences.
