We have been pursuing new strategies to allow CO2 to be used as a feedstock for chemicals and fuels. MeOH is a highly attractive target for CO2 conversion and a new cascade catalytic system for the hydrogenation of CO2 under acidic conditions will be presented. Tuning of the reaction solvent, catalyst concentrations and gas ratios have led to improved TON to MeOH with relatively low by-product (ethylformate and diethylether) formation. The design of the system, mechanistic insights and results involving recycling of the catalysts will be discussed.
