Our student chapter continues its mission to participate in events and activities which encourage outreach, professional development, collaboration, education, and green chemistry. While continuing many of our annual events and activities, we also sought to expand and increase involvement in several service projects we initiated the previous year. In March, we took our second trip to New York City to lead science activities at Pono School NYC, and Thurgood Marshall Academy Lower School (New York, NY). With strategic planning and innovative activities, we were able to reach a greater audience and challenge students to implement green chemistry into their lives. By strengthening our relations with each school, we plan to continue our trip this year. We also began a new activity, green soap-making. We led this activity twice, first with our Advocates for a Sustainable Future club on campus, and then at Somerville High school in partnership with Tufts University through an interchapter relations grant. Through this activity, we were able to teach others the Principles of Green Chemistry and how the activity makes the standard soap-making process greener. In addition to these new developments, we hosted the 27th Annual Science Carnival during Homecoming Weekend to alumni and their families. Within our local community, we taught green chemistry at STEM nights or through classroom lessons in conjunction with students from the Organic Chemistry class at Gordon College. We also continued running monthly science clubs at the Oliver Partnership School in Lawrence, MA. Additionally, we participated in National Chemistry Week and Chemists Celebrate Earth Week at the Boston Children’s Museum and the Museum of Science. We continued to expand our professional development through the 15th annual Green Chemistry lecture, with guest speaker Dr. Ken Doxsee, and invited Garry Haacke, a retired industry professional, to speak at a chapter meeting.
